Girl in a Mirror: A Portrait of Carol Jerrems (2005)

Documentary, Biography

Length: 55 minutes 9 seconds

Synopsis

The documentary is a tribute to photographer Carol Jerrems (1949–1980). Jerrems photographed Melbourne’s sub-culture in the 1970s. The biography is told through the short films she made, her still photographs and interviews with friends and colleagues. Jerrems unsentimentally documents her own decline from polycythemia through photographs.

Curator’s notes

The juxtapositioning of Jerrems’s stark photographs with interviews about her forthright sexuality and approach to life makes for excellent viewing. The Skyhooks sing ‘Living in the 70s’ as Jerrems’s work is shown. Producer Helen Bowden’s credits include Travelling Light (2003), Soft Fruit (1999), China Dolls (1998) and Parklands (1996).
