Mother and Son – The Ride (1993)

Maggie’s favourite son Robert (Henri Szeps) arrives with a proposal to take her for a drive. This is so out of character that Arthur (Garry McDonald) is astonished and suspicious. Against his better judgement he allows his mother to leave. Robert’s plot is revealed as his wife Liz (Judy Morris) calls by to make enquires about Robert’s whereabouts. She rightly suspects there’s another woman in Robert’s life. Mayhem ensues with Maggie blissfully unaware as she revels in her outing.

This is a typical situation comedy (sitcom) consisting of the same characters in each program. There’s the much put upon carer Arthur (Garry McDonald) and his eccentric mother Maggie Beare (Ruth Cracknell), the scheming older brother, Robbie (Henri Szeps) and his snobbish but long-suffering wife, Liz (Judy Morris) who usually manage to dump their marital strife onto the Beare family home.
