Curator’s clip description

This clip shows construction in central Melbourne during the 1920s. A crane lifts a concrete block from the back of a horse-drawn carriage and construction workers build a tall skyscraper. Traffic drives across an overpass above Flinders Railway Station.

Curator’s notes

This actuality footage captures the construction of a skyscraper and documents development in Melbourne shortly before the Depression.

The camera remains still and basic edits are used to link each shot. Filmed in black-and-white, it appears overexposed in parts.
