Curator’s clip description

Marta (Sheila Florance) introduces Anna (Gosia Dobrowolska) to an indoor pool, which is full of old people taking exercise. Marta wonders why Anna, who’s so young and vibrant, wants to spend so much time with an old woman.

Curator’s notes

Cox uses watery imagery throughout, perhaps as a symbol of the renewal of life. Marta and Anna visit a waterfall in a later scene and this waterfall becomes a recurring symbol (see the end of clip three). Once again he juxtaposes the two faces very closely in this scene, which becomes very tender. The intimacy Cox creates on screen comes partly from the way he encourages close physical contact between the actors. One of his films is even called The Human Touch.
